What's the best relationship advice your elders have given you?

anything from choosing a mate to handling relationships, and to break ups. ..and everything else in between and after (like how to treat ex's, etc.)

^_^What's the best relationship advice your elders have given you?
My mother gave me a lot of advice that I never thought fit anything but one thing that she said that the older I get the more truth I see in it was this:

Marry a man who has a good relationship with his mother, not a mamma's boy, but a man who loves and respects his mother.

He is going to treat his wife with the same love and respect he learned from his childhood.

Also, the more you have in common the better chance your relationship has to survive. What's the best relationship advice your elders have given you?
';Start out like you can hold out'; meaning,.....don't try and impress him by doing stuff to get him, and not keeping up with doing the stuff after you got him. For instance, if while you are dating, you cook alone, do the dishes without his help and rub his back every night, even though you are exhausted, then he marries you, he will expect the same treatment after marriage. So start out like you can hold out.
My mom always said ';Never date a boy that you know isn't good enough for you. Every girl deserves a boy that respects them and cares for them, and you're no exception.'; I always go by this.
